TONY BREEDEN | GOALKEEPER
PLAYER BIO
Vastly experienced goalkeeper with over 800 games under his belt, who joined the Pitmen from Southern Premier League Central side Spalding United in January 2025
A familar and popular face in Midlands non-league football over the last twenty years, Breeden played junior football for Knowle in the early 2000s before joining Southern League West side Sutton Coldfield Town in the 2004-2005 season, making his debut towards the end of the campaign
The young stopper joined Nationwide Conference side Tamworth for the first time in July 2005 as cover for ex-Hednesford stopper Mark Gayle; with game time limited at the Lamb, Breeden was loaned out to both Walsall Wood and Stourport Swifts during the season before leaving in May 2006 to join Southern League Midlands side Solihull Borough
In what proved to be Boro's final season before their merger with local rivals Moor Green, Breeden was ever-present between the sticks with forty-one appearances as they finished fourteenth in the league. A move to Solihull's league rivals Rushall Olympic followed in July 2007, with Breeden spending most of the next two seasons at Dales Lane as Rushall enjoyed consecutive fifth placed finishes. There was a three-month loan spell back at Sutton Coldfield midway through the second season, with the stopper making nineteen more starts for the Royals
A move to Southern Premier League side Leamington was in the offing in March 2009, with Breeden finishing the season at the Brakes before returning to Rushall in July 2009. The 2009-2010 season saw the stopper play every minute of every game for the Pics as they finished twelfth in the Northern Premier League Division One South
In July 2010, Breeden made a return to step three with the move back to Leamington, once again playing as the undisputed number one for the Brakes as they finished in the play-offs at the end of the season, losing to the Pitmen at Keys Park in the semi-final. He also chalked up that rarest of things for a goalkeeper - a goal against Chesham United in April 2011
After agreeing a deal to remain at the New Windmill for the 2011-2012 season, Breeden was soon on the move early into the 2011-2012 season as Blue Square Premier side Kidderminster Harriers snapped him up as competition for Danny Lewis. With game time limited upon his arrival and being cup-tied in the F.A. Trophy, Breeden was allowed to join the Pitmen on emergency loan in December 2011 for one game only as cover for the suspended Dan Crane, helping the hosts to a 6-1 win over Mickleover Sports at Keys Park in his only appearance for the club at this point
Breeden did eventually work his way into the Harriers side, making twenty-eight starts at non-league's top level before leaving in June 2012 at the end of his deal to rejoin league rivals Tamworth
It proved to be a tough 2012-2013 season for the Lambs in the Blue Square Bet Premier, narrowly avoiding relegation with a nineteenth placed finish. Breeden made thirty-nine appearances that season, further cementing his reputation as one of the best stoppers in the local non-league scene
A third spell at newly-promoted Skrill North Leamington followed in 2013-2014, with the Brakes doing well to consolidate their position at step two with a mid-table finish. Breeden was on the move once more in the summer as he returned to Damson Park to sign for fellow step two side Solihull Moors
Another mid-table finish for the Moors saw Breeden as a virtual ever-present between the posts, making forty-four appearances before electing to link up with his old manager Paul Holleran at Leamington once more for a fourth spell in May 2015
This proved to be a pivotal move in Breeden's career as he made another 200+ appearances for the Brakes in the next four seasons as Leamington regained their National League North status in 2017 after beating Hitchin Town 2-1 in the Southern Premier League play-off final. He also added more goals to his solitary strike from 2011, scoring against Bedworth United in October 2015, Alfreton Town in September 2017 and Chorley in April 2018
His time at Leamington was to end acrimoniously, however, as a training ground bust-up with team-mate Jack Edwards in the pre-season build-up to the 2019-2020 campaign saw him depart and join Bromsgrove Sporting. After seventeen appearances at the Victoria Ground and a missed penalty against the Pitmen in October 2019, Breeden was on the move once more as he joined league rivals Nuneaton Borough in November 2019
The 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons were both heavily affected by the covid pandemic, with Breeden remaining at Nuneaton for the 2021-2022 season. He became a viral sensation in November 2019 as his penalty kick against Stratford Town at Liberty Way was skied high over the crossbar before smashing a light in the terrace behind the goal. The 2021-2022 season proved to be a frustrating one for Boro with a mid-table finish before a much-improved 2022-2023 season saw them finish fifth and make it all the way through to the play-off final, where they were beaten on penalties by Breeden's old club Rushall
A move to big-spending Northern Premier League Midland side Spalding United was next up for the veteran stopper in June 2023, with the Tulips running away with the title and a first-ever promotion to step three. Breeden was ever-present throughout his time there, making nearly fifty starts before deciding on a return to his native West Midlands in January 2025 with a permanent move to the ambitious Pitmen
